Organizational Context

Tumaini Letu is a non-profit organization operating at Dzaleka Refugee Camp, Dowa Malawi. The organization is focused on Cultural Development and Cultural Education, founded in 2012. Tumaini Letu aims to promote intercultural harmony, mutual understanding, and peaceful co-existence between refugees and host communities using entertainment and artistic expression. Tumaini Letu also aims to boost the economy of refugees through entrepreneurship and innovative programs. The flagship program of Tumaini Letu is the annual Tumaini Festival established in 2014.

Operational Context/Role


Communications & Fundraising Officer’s primary responsibility is to create and distribute content and to promote the Tumaini Letu brand, activities, and products. To act as a liaison between the Tumaini Letu, the public, and the media to ensure that the Tumaini brand remains top of mind. To create and implement fundraising initiatives, to support the fundraising activities of the Tumaini Letu team with the guidance and support of the Executive Director. He/she is required to identify and develop key opportunities for visibility and for funding. The Officer will work in close collaboration with ED as well as the Programs Officer. He/she will implement positive and effective relationships with the media and key stakeholders in the interest of promoting Tumaini Letu's objectives.

Core Tasks and Responsibilities


1. Communications
  • Managing the Organization’s social media platforms and actively proposing social media initiatives supporting the overall communications efforts;
  • Monitoring traditional and social media and producing regular coverage reports;
  • Managing the Organization’s website and ensuring that is always up to date and consistent with the other digital platforms;
  • Producing a quarterly digital newsletter;
  • Maintaining and updating the communications unit’s back-office tools: the editorial calendar, the photo library, and the contacts database;
  • Overseeing the production of print products such as brochures, annual reports, posters, and leaflets with the Organization’s external graphic designers, printers, and other partners;
  • Managing the Organization’s inventory of public communications material and ensuring that key products are always on display and accessible;

2. Fundraising

  • Conducting research on fundraising opportunities;
  • Writing, submitting, and uploading press releases as required;
  • Writing funding proposals and submitting these to potential donors;
  • Preparing quarterly budgets;
  • Coming up with ingenious ways to raise awareness;
  • Implementing a variety of marketing strategies and promotional campaigns;
  • Organizing and attending non-profit events and networking with relevant stakeholders;
  • Establishing good relationships with staff, members of the public, and the media;
  • And other duties assigned from time to time.

Qualifications and Competencies



  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, International Relations or any related field;
  • At least five (5) years of professional experience working with NGOs proposal and reports writing, project evaluation, and monitoring;
  • Sound knowledge of the charity sector;
  • Excellent written, verbal, and telephonic communication skills
  • Computer literate (proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.);
  • Demonstrated experience producing and editing content for websites;
  • Being organized and able to manage and maintain contacts- and photo- databases;
  • Being able at least at a basic level, working with Canva, Photoshop, In-design or other design programs;
  • Having experience with website management and content management such as WordPress, Wix, etc.;
  • Having a keen eye for design and photo as well as video editing;
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills, flexibility, and adaptability
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and promote effective teamwork also maintaining good relationships with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong management, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Being ready to work odd hours and weekends if communications priorities arise;

  • Experience working in rural communities

TERMS AND CONDITIONS


The contract is for one (1) year renewable, subject to funding availability, with an initial probation period of one (3) three months.
