Inua Advocacy is seeking an experienced practicing Lawyer to join our team. The ideal candidate is passionate about refugee rights, knowledgeable about international and domestic laws, and committed to advocating for justice on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers in Malawi.

About Inua Advocacy:


Inua Advocacy is a civil society organization dedicated to championing the rights of refugees in Malawi. We strive to advocate for policy changes, provide legal assistance, create accountability among those who serve refugees, and promote awareness of refugee rights to ensure that refugees are treated with dignity and respect.

Contract period: One year renewable

Key Responsibilities:

  • Legal Assistance: Provide comprehensive legal advice and representation to refugees and asylum seekers in Malawi, encompassing asylum applications, appeals, detention cases, and any other legal matters.
  • Case Management: Manage cases escalated to Inua Advocacy through our complaint database. Review logged cases, assess their merits, and escalate them to relevant authorities or legal partners for resolution.
  • Policy Advocacy: Conduct research, analysis, and advocacy to influence changes in domestic laws and policies affecting refugees. Advocate for the enhancement of the refugees' rights to work, education, healthcare, and freedom of movement.
  • Capacity Building: Develop and deliver training sessions and workshops on refugee rights and legal procedures, for refugees and other stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with local and international organizations, government agencies, and legal practitioners to strengthen protection mechanisms and improve access to justice for refugees.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Document instances of human rights violations against refugees, prepare legal briefs, reports, and submissions to relevant authorities, and contribute to monitoring and evaluation activities.
  • Representation: Represent Inua in meetings, forums, and coalitions focused on refugee rights. Participate in networking events to raise awareness and build partnerships that further our mission of refugee protection and empowerment.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Law from a recognized institution; additional specialization in human rights law
  • will be an added advantage.
  • Admitted to the Bar.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience practicing law.
  • Strong understanding of international and domestic legal frameworks related to refugee
  • protection and asylum procedures.
  • Excellent research, analytical, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to draft legal documents and advocacy materials effectively.
  • Experience working with marginalized communities.
  • Commitment to Inua Advocacy's mission, values, and principles of impartiality, independence, and accountability.
  • Knowledge of Chichewa required. Knowledge of Swahili is an added advantage.
  • Holder of a valid driving license.
